Located 11 km southeast of the CBD, Caulfield North was once the location of many large Victorian mansions on large estates, most of which were demolished and sub-divided in the early twentieth century. The population consists mainly of independent young people (18.5%), families (17%) and maturing and established adults (14.5%). The median age is 37. 45% of houses are fully owned. It is largely a Jewish enclave, with the highest Jewish population in Melbourne. There are many synagogues and kosher shops in the area and, as such, properties are highly sought after. Serviced by two train stations and three tramlines, it is one of Melbourne’s most accessible suburbs via public transport.
Caulfield Racecourse hosts about twenty race days each season, including the prestigious Caulfield Cup. Caulfield Grammar School is among the best schools in Victoria. It is also the second largest, with almost 3000 students located over three campuses around Melbourne. Monash University has a campus in Caulfield, which hosts about 13,000 students.
